World Island Networks & Organisations conference

9 September, 9:00-10:30

This event will bring together international networks and organisations from around the world that contribute to the preservation of the islands' environment and heritage.

SMILO has carried out a mapping of these networks in order to analyse their role and identify opportunities for cooperation between these stakeholders. The intermediate results of this analysis will be presented, and a panel discussion with international institutions and funders will follow the presentation.

Small African Islands – Leaders of sustainable solutions

9 September, 11:00-13:00

Small African islands are leading the way towards more sustainable development. They are actively implementing sustainable solutions in relation to waste management, energy, water & sanitation, biodiversity and landscapes protection. SMILO supports 17 innovative projects through its Islands Fund and Grants for Small Islands Solutions Programme, funded by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM).

During this event, local NGOs, communities and organisations that are leading these projects will share their results and good practices.

Mediterranean Islands – Lands of Solutions against Plastic Pollution

9 September, 14:00-16:00

The Mediterranean is particularly impacted by plastic pollution, being the most polluted sea in the world. These concerns are even more worrying on island sites, limited in their space and with often large quantities of plastics waste and insufficient resources to set up complete sorting and recycling channels.

Nevertheless, small islands remain resilient territories, proposing innovative and sustainable solutions. The results of such actions must be shared. That is the aim of the BeMed-Islands capitalisation process and of this meeting.
